We just made our annual trek to the Etzikom Museum of South-East Alberta / Historic Windpower Interpretive Centre.

This is one of the very best museums we have ever visited. It encompasses over 11,000 square feet of indoor display area and four acres of outdoor displays featuring hundreds of artifacts and antiques relating to the homesteading days of Southern Alberta. There is a 1/4 mile self-guided tour which covers the overall history of wind power utilization in Canada. Etzikom is located at the intersection of Highways 885 and 61, approximately 90 km southwest of Medicine Hat and 140 km east of Lethbridge.

Inside the museum you will find ‘Main Street’ which includes a General Store, Barber Shop, Hotel, School Room, Blacksmith Shop and more; “Homesteader Room” where you can walk through a furnished and equipped home; ‘Music Room’ full of antique instruments including operational player pianos and a great vinyl library; ‘Wildlife and Natural History Room’ and many more displays. The Historic Windpower Interpretive Centre is impressive with many windmills displayed along with the stories of their history.

The Etzikom Museum is open to the public May 15 – Labour Day, Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 12 pm to 6 pm. During offseason September – May 14, you may book an appointment to view the museum by calling (403) 666-3915. You can contact the museum at (403) 666-3737, Box 585, Etzikom, AB T0K 0W0. You can also find the Etzikom Museum on Facebook and Twitter!

After your visit is a great time to browse the gift shop for handcrafted items, mementos of your visit, and books. Then check out the cafe – they always have yummy baked goods, refreshments and great ice cream.
